Types of semiconductors

what is semiconductors?

is a conductor whose conductivity lies between insulator and conductor.

Types of semiconductors

  1. intrinsic
  2. extrensic
  Intrisic semiconductors

is a conductors which are in pure form without any impurities.

eg: silicon and germinium

Notes
numer of hole = number of electron
  • majority charge carrier: Both hole and electron
  • net charge is always zero
Extrinsic semiconductuors
is a semiconductors which are formed due to adding impurities to a conductors and it has two types and they are

  1. Ptype
  2. Ntype
Ptype
is formed by adding trivalent impurities or impurity atom which has three valence electrons.

eg; Boron, Gallium,Indiumand aluminium.

Notes
  • majority charge carrier is hole
  • number of hole > number of electron
Ntype
is formed by adding pentavalent impurities or impurity atom having five valence electrons.

eg: arsenic, phosporus

Notes
  • majority charge carrier is electrons
  • number of hole <electron
